Withinspiration from Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® DISH, I am sharing with you my 5 Tips to Allow Your Dogs to be Part of the Family During Dinnertime. In my home, dinnertime is often the only time of day where the family is gathered in one room to talk and enjoy each others company. Shouldn’t your fur babies be a part of that time? I am sharing tips to make that possible. I am also sharing a recipe for all us humans for Spicy Honey Grilled Chicken Wings with honey, garlic, and hot sauce that is a real crowd pleasure.

My models today are Bella, who is a Chihuahua-Yorkie mix, and Chance, a Boxer-Lab-Beagle-possible some other breedmix. Both of my dogs were adopted. Bella was adopted over 2 years ago and had already been with multiple owners before she came to us. Chance was adopted almost 8 years ago. His litter was dropped off at a local pet store and put up for adoption. We fell in love with those big, droopy eyes immediately. I recently learned about Rachael’s Rescue® through The Rachael Ray Foundation . A portion of proceeds from each sale of Nutrish DISH is donated to The Rachael Ray Foundation. Rachael’s Rescue has donated more than $17.5 million dollars to pet charities and other organizations that do good for animals. Wowza!

5 Tips to Allow Your Dogs to be Part of the Family During Dinnertime:

1. Feed your dogs a quality dinner. Nutrish DISH hasreal U.S. farm raised chicken or beefas the first ingredient. When purchasing dog food, the most important factor that I look at is if the first ingredient is meat. Avoid corn or wheat. I bought the dogs Nutrish DISH Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe and it filled the factors I look for in dog food. Meat is the first ingredient, hasbrown rice, carrots, peas, and no corn. The dogs went bananas for it. The more interested the dogs are in their own dinner, the less interest they have in sticking their little noses in your chicken wings.

5 Tips to Allow Your Dogs to be Part of the Family During Dinnertime {+ Spicy Honey Grilled Chicken Wing Recipe} - Simply Made Recipes (4)2. Create a spot near the family for the dogs to eat. Have an area just for the dogs where the children are not allowed to go and bother them eating. Set up their bowls, maybe some placements under the bowls in case of spills. I have tried over and over again to separate the dogs from one another but they end up on top of each other regardless. Chance eats about 3/4 of his bowl and then lays down to wait for Bella to finish eating and then polishes off all the food. I guess they have it all worked out amongst themselves. The important thing is that nobody is going over to them while eating and the kids aren’t sticking their fingers in the food and disrupting dinnertime. Let the dogs relax in their own space.

3. Train your dogs not to beg. Have aNO begging for food rule for your dog. I hate when we eat dinner at a friends house and I have an army of little dogs climbing up on me while eating. It takes some patience to train your dogs but eventually it all becomes routine. We trained the dogs with a simple “sit” and “stay” command for dinnertime. I save “no” for times I am super serious and they know to stop whatever they are doing immediately. I also have hand gestures for commands so I don’t have to say anything at all to disrupt the meal. I make a fist and then lay my fingers flat out, they know to sit and stay. If you are having a hard time training your dog, try hand gestures with the commands. Sometimes, they respond much better to the visual commands.I just have one for each basic commandfor sit, stay, lay down, up,and dance. Yes, I said dance. Can’t help myself.

4. Never, ever, ever feed the dogs from your plate. Even if everyone is done eating and you want them to take the last bite as a treat. I know you love them but they do not need it. It is not their food. Don’t allow them to think itis their food. You have them covered already with a quality food, Nutrish DISH.

5. We covered training your dog not to beg or eat from your plate but if you have children you know this isn’t always easy. Teach your children that the dogs have their food, their own spot to eat and that they are not allowed to throw food down to them or disrupt their mealtime. Trust me, I had a heck of a time with both my children teaching them all these things. The kids have tried it all from eating dog food to throwing chocolate at the dogs to teasing them with a slice of pizza. Luckily the dogs are trained well enough that they ignore most of the chaos. Just keep on the training and teaching. Most days don’t cause too much stress but they all have moments.

Aaron and me had ourmarital dispute for the week was how to properly prepare chicken wings. Notice the photo above with the circle around the portion of the chicken in question. I always trim these parts off before cooking and my husband does not. He won this argument round since he was the one doing the grilling. Plus, he hasn’t won an argument in awhile so I had to give him a win. Cut that part of or not. Tastes awesome either way.

When grilling chicken wings, add the dry seasonings before cooking and then toss with all the wet ingredients after cooking. I sprinkledsome garlic powder, pepper and cayenne to prep. Toss the chicken wings on the grill for 10-12 minutes each side on a medium heat. As the wings cook, prepare your sauce with honey, butter, sriracha, hot sauce and cider vinegar. When the wings come off the grill give them a toss in a large bowl with some sauce added and serve. Serve with celery and iced tea. Oh yeah, bring napkins to the table. Will need napkins.

5 Tips to Allow Your Dogs to be Part of the Family During Dinnertime {+ Spicy Honey Grilled Chicken Wing Recipe} - Simply Made Recipes (10)

  • 3 pounds chicken wings
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1 cup honey
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons sriracha
  • .5 cup hot sauce of choice
  • 2 teaspoons cider vinegar (optional, I have made them with or without the vinegar)
  1. Trim chicken wings... or not.
  2. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne over both sides of chicken wings.
  3. Heat up grill on a medium to high heat.
  4. Toss chicken wings on grill for 10-12 minutes each side. Total of 20-24 minutes cook time.
  5. In a small bowl, add melted butter, sriracha, hot sauce, honey and cider vinegar. Mix well. Today we used Frank's hot sauce.
  6. I like to toss the chicken wings in sauce in groups of about 6 wings. So, add 6 wings to a large bowl, drizzle some of your hot sauce mixture. Give a good toss to coat all the wings.
  7. Serve.

Yum, Yum! Those chicken wings look great! We are guilty of feeding our dog the leftovers from our plate. 🙁 We will have to stop this as she is getting quite annoying and hangs around begging for food. Naughty parents!

Haha. I think we all do it every once in awhile (they give you those sad little doggy eyes) but it will help training them better by not feeding them off your plate.

Thank you for these duper helpful tips! I’m struggling with discipline with one of my dogs (a mixed breed between napolitan mastiff and doberman). I will go look for the Nutri Dish at my pet store. And also, thanks for the spicy wings recipe! My hubby is a huge fan on those! 🙂
