The air fryer is one of my favorite kitchen appliances for cooking frozen food. Check out some of these recipes for Air Fryer Chicken Cordon Blue, Air Fryer Grilled Cheese, Air Fryer Frozen Onion Rings, and Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan.

For the longest time, the only type of potato going into my air fryer was a frozen store-bought french fry. THAT’S IT. My go-to air fryer setting for a lot of frozen food is 350 for 12 minutes. That does the trick all the time for any type of Ore Ida frozen potato or frozen food in general that can be cooked in your air fryer.

  • Potatoes - The best potatoes for French fries are Russet potatoes. They have a high starch content which results in a crispy exterior and fluffy interior. Other varieties of potatoes, such as Yukon Gold or red potatoes are perfect for making french fries in your air fryer!
  • Cooking Spray- I like to use a Cooking spray to keep the calories low and it helps get the potatoes extra crispy. Olive oil is also a good choice to rub over the potatoes.
  • Seasoning salt of choice - I prefer Dano's or a Blackened Seasoning.
  • Salt and Pepper - to taste

Best Air Fryer Tips

The air fryer is so great for cooking simple basic food like air fryer steak, air fryer hard-boiled eggs, and air fryer bacon. Cook up some air fryer chicken breasts for the week and use it chicken quesadillas.

Overcrowding:Do not overcrowd the basket. Place items in a single layer in the air fryer basket or some food will not cook properly or all the way through.

Use a spray oil such as Pam to get food extra crispy and to save on calories.

Use parchment paper on the bottom of your air fryer for easy clean up.

Recipe FAQS

What are the best potatoes for potato wedges?

Yukon golds are one of my favorite types of potatoes to use. They are the perfect size for potato wedges and they cook great in the air fryer. They are small and great for one or two servings. Their skin is yellow instead of white. Russets will also work for this but since they are a larger potato, they might take longer to cook. If you are using russet potatoes check them to see if they are still cooked at the time mentioned below in the recipe. If they are not done you will need to cook them longer.

What are the best air fryers?

I've had 3 or 4 different air fryers or the past 5 years and each one of them has worked very well with the air fryer recipes on this site. If you want to be able to cook more food for your family at once then get an air fryer with a large basket such as 5.3 quarts. Look for ones that say nonstick on them and has multiple program settings.
Power XL Air Fryer 5.3 Quart Basket. - This was my very first air fryer.

Do I need to preheat my air fryer?

Some air fryers requirepreheatingand some do not. Be sure to check your air fryer manual.

Do you need to soak potatoes before air frying?

No, You do not need to soak the raw potatoes in any water at all before air frying. This just removes any excess potato starch and helps the potatoes achieve maximum crispiness in the deep fryer. The air fryer takes care of the crisp factor for you. For the longest time, I was skeptical about cooking raw potatoes in the air fryer because of having to soak the potatoes overnight, and now I am not anymore. You get the same results roasting these in the oven. Which there are instructions below.

Why do you soak potatoes in water before air frying? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

What does cornstarch do for air frying? ›

Cornstarch – A bit of cornstarch really helps the air fryer do it's thing with our potato wedges. We get a perfect crunch without using too much oil. Seasoning Blend – I keep the seasoning pretty simple on these – paprika, garlic powder, salt, chili powder, etc.

Why are my fries not crispy in air fryer? ›

It's essential that you spread the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket and that you leave a little space between each one. If they're too crowded, the potatoes will steam inside the air fryer, and they won't get crispy. In order to give them adequate space, you'll likely need to work in batches.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before frying? ›

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch activating it, making it harder to separate from the potatoes.

How long should I soak potatoes for fries? ›

If you're pressed for time, the slightly sticky, cut potatoes should be soaked for a minimum of 15 minutes. However, a longer soak time may allow more starch to be removed. So, if you can prep the fries ahead of time, a few hours of soaking can help make them even crispier.

What is the crisp setting on the air fryer? ›

Air Crisp: Use this setting for making crispy foods like french fries, chicken wings, or anything you want to have a crunchy texture. Bake: Choose this setting when you're making baked goods like cookies, muffins, or even small cakes. It's like using a small oven.

What does flour do in air fryer? ›

Flour — All-purpose flour or bread flour is perfect for fried chicken as it gives the chicken a golden-brown coating after being air-fried. It is also neutral in flavor, so it doesn't compete with the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika added to it.

Why aren t my potatoes crispy in the air fryer? ›

Tips for crispy air fryer potatoes:
