Free Crochet Pattern: One Hour Cowl Crochet Pattern - Yarn Bean (2024)

The season for gifting is upon us and if you’re anything like me, you have a preference for giving handmade gifts. It can be difficult to balance your gift-giving list with crochet projects that aren’t too time-consuming… which is why I wrote this super quick, super beautiful cowl pattern! I named this cowl the “One Hour Cowl” because it literally took me less than an hour to make. The One Hour Cowl crochet pattern uses an easy stitch repeat which makes it a great pattern to work up during an episode of your favorite TV show. Trust me – I’ve whipped up two during a binge session of You Season 3.

This pattern is great for so many reasons:

  • Easy stitch repeat (Lemon Peel Stitch) which is great for beginners
  • Quick and easy – it ain’t called the One Hour Cowl for nothin!
  • Endless color options – the yarn I used, SUGARBUSH CHILL, comes in so many colors that I guarantee you will find some you like!

The One Hour Cowl is perfect for last minute market prep and last minute gifting. Nobody will be able to resist the pure SQUISH!

This pattern is worked in the round and uses the Lemon Peel Stitch (alternating single crochet and double crochet). You can work until the product reaches your desired height or until you run out of yarn! For maximum squish, I recommend following the pattern using a weight 6/Super Bulky wool yarn. Of course, this pattern can be adjusted by adding or decreasing your starting chain and using your preferred yarn. This is your show baby, run with it.

Supplies Needed:

  • 11.5 mm crochet hook
  • 2 skeins of Sugarbush Chill (3.5 oz/52 yards per skein) or another weight 6/Super Bulky yarn
    • You can find Sugarbush Chill on Yarnspiration’s website or even here on Amazon. I prefer this yarn for this pattern because it’s made from 100% wool and is just so luxurious! *heart eyes emoji*
  • Scissors and yarn needle

Terminology and Abbreviations:

  • Ch – Chain
  • Dc – double crochet
  • FO – Fasten off
  • Sc – single crochet

Instructions:

Make a slip stitch and ch 43. Join in the round by placing a slip stitch into your slip stitch. Take care not to twist your starting chain when you join!

Row 1: Work in the lemon peel stitch – *sc 1, dc 1* repeat between * and * until the end of the row. Join into the first row with a slip stitch. Ch 1.

Rows 2: *dc 1, sc 1* repeat between * and * until the end of the row. You want to be alternating between single crochet and double crochet not only within the row, but between each row. For example – you should be putting a sc into a dc in the previous row, and a dc into the sc in the previous row.

Repeat rows 1-2 until you run out of yarn or until your cowl reaches your desired length.

Cut any excess yarn, and weave in your ends.
